How Discipline plays an important role in an athlete’s life.

In sports there is always a desired goal that an athlete competes for. For going at the top of a sport an athlete needs to have physical fitness, mental toughness and emotional stability. While being associated with a sport that person will need a strong work ethic. Having a good work ethic means that the athlete needs to be performing at the best of his ability, he needs to be consistent in his training and he will have to be dedicated enough to reach his final destination. If the athlete is disciplined, he will be able to set and prioritize his goals in a better way.

For example, the former world no.1 in tennis Sir Andy Murray, he had a very bad injury when he was at the peak of his career. At that time, he took a 342-day breaks because of his injury and could not even play a 5-setter match. Over the course of 2 years, he pulled out of most of the major tournaments and had thoughts of retiring. Finally in 2023 Murray came back with a bang, reaching almost till quarters in 2 out of the 3 major tournaments. Out here the main part is not the comeback but how did the comeback happen. For this comeback Murray need to spend countless hours just training to be fit to be. He had to be dedicated and disciplined so he can prioritize his time working on his tennis and working on strengthening his body to be able to sustain himself for a tennis match. This is one of the examples for a disciplined athlete, like this there are many athletes that have made a comeback in their sport due to their dedication and discipline.

How can you build self discipline? Being at the top of your sport require consistency and high intensity training. to achieve that an athlete needs self discipline. To get self discipline the athlete with need a routine which they shall follow before or after their match. They need to be consistently performing that routine . When an athlete does not want to perform but due to his will power he performs is called self discipline.

Some benefits an athlete can achieve due to self discipline are that it increase an athlete’s focus, it wont allow them to get distracted. It also boosts their self confidence which allows them to master their skill. As to master a skill requires hours of training with focus then only the skill can be mastered. It increases self confidence by helping the athlete control their thoughts and to not allow thought and emotions come and distract the athlete. The most important benefit is it will not allow procrastination. It is said that procrastination is success’s enemy. self discipline help the mind get power to overcome procrastination.

I believe self discipline helps the athlete in their mental and physical aspect of their sport. Mastering self discipline will give the athlete fulfillment . It will also give the athlete confidence that he can dominate his sport.
